Man Charged in Saskatoon under new Federal prostituion laws
A Quebec man faces four charges in Saskatoon under the newly proclaimed prostitution law.
Mali Jean, 27, is believed to be the first person charged under the new law.
Jean appeared by video in provincial court Friday in relation to charges dated July 27, 2015. He returns to court Aug 25 to set a date for a bail hearing.
All allegations relate to explotation of one woman.
Bill C-36 — the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act – came into effect late last year. The government said the controversial law is designed to make it more difficult for johns and pimps in the sex trade while protecting sex workers.
Jean is also facing previous charges for drug trafficking, assault with a weapon and breaching a recognizance.
